How Does Fat Freezing Work?

The fat freezing procedure requires an assessment of the fatty deposits and the area to be treated is outlined with a skin-marking pencil. Patients do not require anesthesia or intravenous sedation for the procedure.

A handheld device, the applicator, is used to freeze the layer of fat cells underneath the skin. The first step is to apply a gel pad to the area to protect the skin. The fatty bulge is vacuumed into the applicator’s hollow opening. You will feel a tugging sensation when the suction is applied.

These sensations, like intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, cramping, reduce after 5 to 10 minutes, as the area numbs as it cools down. The fat layer is cooled, gradually, to a temperature between 30.2°F and 39.2°F.

The fat freezing procedure to treat an area can take up to one hour. Once treated, the area is massaged for a few minutes to help break down the fat cells.

How Much Localized Fat Can Be Lost from Fat Freezing?

From our experience, upon treating localized fatty deposits, an average fat reduction between 15% and 28% within 4 months of the initial treatment is seen. However, changes can be noticed within 3 weeks on treatment and a dramatic change can be apparent within 2 months.
